Kids watch violent cartoons!

No shit. I'm not bashing the study, it seems that everything is in order and they don't seem to be making any judgements. One problem though: They talk about kids under 8 not being able to distinguish real violence from fantasy, which I think is bullshit, but the fact is that many of these shows aren't really geared towards the under 8 crowd any way. Teen Titans for example, not for the under 8 crowd, watched by them for sure, but that's because parents just throw their kids in front of the TV.

Cartoons are not just for kids, everybody should know that by now, look at Family Guy, Futurama and King of the Hill, none are for kids. Parents need to uderstand that just because it's animated doesn't mean it's intended for little Billy or Susy. Parents need to actually pay some fucking attention to their kids already. Jesus, the damn ratings are there after each commercial break and in the show info for a reason people!

First off, perfectly put, and well said. Secondly, do you remember when we were kids and our parents used to kick us out of the fucking house and make us actually interact with the real world? That just does not happen like it used to. My god son is three, and has been damn near raised by the power rangers and Barney. Honestly, parents are getting lazy these days. There is a reason this is the fattest generation ever, and the bigger picture here is part of it. Parents just don't seem to give a damn anymore.

I only vaguely remember it, because when I moved to C Town in the fourth grade, I had like no friends other than Lemanski, who could never hang out, until high school. Mostly I read and played Nintentdo and watched TV. It's a fucking marvel that I'm fat now, isn't it?

Erik's half-brother just turned 6, and he watches way too much TV. They have TWO TiVos there, and he basically gets one to himself, it's fucking sad. At least the boy has a V-Smile, so while he's sitting in the house all damn day he can interact with something. I swear, if you're going to park a kid in front of a screen, at least give them a controller so they can interact with a video game instead of soak up the crappy TV shows kids watch.

At least they feed him actual, healthy food instead of fast food garbage and candy. Also, at te age of 6 he can pretty much beat me at chess, which means either he's really good, or I suck ass. He did concede (even used the word concede) on Sunday because the game was starting to drag and he wanted to go play with his cousin. Good thing too, because I was never going to catch his damn king.

I like how they ALWAYS act like this is some new thing. Do these people consciously IGNORE how fucking violent the old Warner Brothers and Tom and Jerry cartoons were or what? Shit, even the old DISNEY shorts could get violent as hell.

They actually mention that in the article. They cite the seriousness and mood of the violent scenes as the problem. One guy is quoted as saying that the violence in the old WB cartoons never harmed him, but it's quite differant than the stuff in Teen Titans, Power Rangers, and the like. He makes a good point, the imagery is quite differant.

This kind of violence is pretty new, at least it was new in the 80s, but people are just starting to notice it now, for good or ill. They also mention the fact that there's more violence in these kids shows, averaged out, then in adult programming in prime time. That caught my attention.
